The song was composed in 1780 by Jean Martini (his original name was, "Johann Scwartzendorf"), took its libretto from a poem by Jean de Florian (1755-1794), which is in his romancce, "célestine". The classical French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) arranged the piece, finally, for orchestra.
