SÉAMUS BEGLEY
Accordion player and singer Séamus Begley is one of the most popular Irish traditional musicians, from one of the most musically acclaimed Irish families. He comes from the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of Dingle, in Co. Kerry, the son of local accordionist Bhreandáin Bheaglaoich. He played music from an early age, and at 14 started playing accordion at local dances. In 1972 he recorded his first album, An Ciarraíoch Mallaithe with his sister Máire. He lived in Chicago, working as a truck driver, in 1976, and since then has lived in Kerry. Máire and Séamus made a second album for Gael Linn in 1989, with Seamus on accordion,. Máire on piano and piano-accordion, both singing, and introducing Stephen Cooney on guitar and piano. He is the quintessential Irish musician, an eager storyteller known for his sharp wit and famous for pumping out tune after tune at all night sessions. He plays with an energy that is alarming, bringing a frisky spontaneity to his box-playing, belting out jigs, slides and polkas with rapid sprays of reckless ornamentation before making a sudden key change into a bitter-sweet air, sung or played on the accordion. His repertoire reflects his own place and his style of playing is much influenced by a now gone generation of accordion and fiddle players who came to céilí in his family home.Seamus’s style is unique and he is considered by many to be one of the finest players of the dance music of West Kerry and is never happier than when people are dancing to his music. Séamus divides his time between his small holding in the West Kerry Gaeltacht and travelling Ireland and the world playing music. He has toured extensively with Jim Murray, Altan, Steve Cooney and Mary Black etc.

Stephen Cooney

Stephen Cooney was born in Melbourne, Australia. Steve started his professional musical career at the age of 17, playing for a while in the US before returning home, where he was in a number of rock bands, (Bushwackers, Fruitcake) and the successful folk/rock band, Red Gum. In 1981 he bought a one-way ticket to Ireland, from where his ancestors had come, where he busked and worked odd jobs for a few months, before joining Stockton's Wing as bassist with whom he stayed until 1981. Steve made a major contribution to Sharon Shannon's first album, and has performanced and recorded with Dermot Byrne, Altan, Martin Hayes and others. His technique is excellent, and his understanding of traditional music and accompaniment is attested to by the number of traditional groups and albums he has contributed to.
