Numbersix Feat. Emily Spiller - Smoke And Mirrors - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 16, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Following up his two previous singles, both collaborations with Emily Spiller (Beacon Hill Records) that yielded world class remixes care of the West Coast's finest, Victoria-based producer Numbersix returns to EVD with an EP full of originals. Telekinetic Lovers sees Spiller returning to lend her haunting vocals to the track "Smoke And Mirrors", but the sound palette expands to include relative newcomer Breanne Quigley (a.k.a. Bre Q) and a bit of singing from Numbersix himself.

Bre Q's breathy, mature vocals complete a chill drum and bass sound on "New Colour" that wouldn't be out of place on Kosheen's Resist, with a gated pad and classic shuffle percussion complimenting a rolling, sine wave laced bass line. "Dreaming" slows things down with a clean, spaced out broken beat, techy stabs, percolating lead, and swirling ambiance, with Bre delivering the titular refrain in an appropriately reverberated timbre.

The aforementioned "Smoke And Mirrors" has a punchy groove, with skittering hi-hats and techy kicks with a sub bass hum, eloquently supporting an ethereal, ambient pad that floats in the wake of Spiller's delayed vocals. A bit of upright bass lends a jazzy feel to it, like New Forms era Roni Size. "Potion" has a more masculine flavour thanks to Numbersix picking up the mic to deliver his own soul-baring lyrics ("You're in my blood"), which lends the deep, moaning bass and the hiss of percussion a touch more menace by association, though the overall feel remains contemplative.

All of the music and lyrics on this EP were written by the man in question, pairing emotionally charged words with clean, smooth production values that harken back to the golden age of drum and bass.
