Happy Winter Solstice - 8 Month Malfunction - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 21, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Being raised as a Catholic child, Christmas was common place in my home as I grew up and it still conjours up very many happy memories of my childhood. But as I grew up, myself and the Catholic Church has a bit of a falling out and haven't spoken since. But I carried on with Christmas, minus the Midnight Mass, and still got a warm fuzzy feeling from the tradition that always had been.

Christmas carries lots of symbology about it; trees, yule logs, decorations, presents, feasting and more, which never really fit into the whole religion thing for me, so as I grew away from religion, I looked in to more of the history, and found out the symbols, and also the traditional festivities around the same time as what we now call Christmas, stretch back many many years before the alleged birth of Christ on 25th December some 2000 plus years ago.

The festivities centred around The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, and in the astronomical calendar, the first day of Winter. It marked the return of the Sun for longer days and shorter nights, heralding in Spring, which meant crops would grow, livestock would reproduce and the land that the people depended on to survive would refresh itself. It was an important time especially if the weather had been harsh and unforgiving. Ancient people knew the importance of the Sun and how it affected their daily lives, and they looked upon the Sun as a God...

The very symbols that we still use for our Christian Christmas today are those that can be found in the Nordic Pagan festivals of Yule, the Roman Pagan festival of Saturnalia and in many other cultures across the world. In some cases, what these symbols used to represent wasn't always that nice either...

Although this is slightly controversial, we do not mean to offend, and Toni and I wish everyone, of any culture, no matter what you believe, A Happy Winter Solstice, a Happy Pagan Festival, Happy Saturnalia, Happy Yule and of course, a Happy Christmas!

Lyrics: Happy Winter Solstice

Lets gather round the Christmas tree
the pagan sacrificial tree,
where they used to kill kids to appease the mother earth...
Let's kiss under the mistletoe,
the poison of the druids shows,
and the kiss can be linked to sexual depravity...

What do you percieve?
Yeah what do you see?
Under the christian veneer that they expect us to believe

Let's feast upon the festive food,
like the Romans made the Jewish do,
before they chased them in the streets to beat them half to death,
Let's eat a log of chocolate cheer,
A symbol of the shortest day of the year,
Where if the fires went out you could die in the winters freeze

What do you percieve?
Yeah what do you see?
Under the christian veneer that they expect us to believe
And what we celebrate,
Is still an important date,
A tradition observed by ancient man way before christ...

Happy Winter Solstice
Happy Pagan Festival,
Happy Saturnalia
Happy Yule, x2

It was easy for the church to say,
that the symbols they could remain the same,
as long as we got drunk in the name of baby Jesus
There's no Christmas trees in Bethlehem,
And the presents weren't from three wise men,
they're a symbols of a tax to the aristocracy...
Lets hear it for the holly tree,
Alive through winter, evergreen
That was claimed by the church to lay where jesus walked,
Saint Nick we know as Santa Claus,
Some truth in religion here of course
That was painted corporate red in rock'n'rolla cola wars

What do you percieve?
Yeah what do you see?
Under the christian veneer that they expect us to believe
And what we celebrate,
Is still an important date,
A tradition observed by ancient man way before christ...

Happy Winter Solstice
Happy Pagan Festival,
Happy Saturnalia
Happy Yule, x2
