The history of Dorian Gray starts at the end of the 80's as a musical project going counterflow for that period.
The first era of the band, in fact, thanks to important live shows such as Arezzo Wave III, the main Italian independent and underground rock festival, gives off to a hard and nocturnal, psychedelic and theatrical sound, many years anticipating some contemporary trends yet to come.
Thanks to the peculiarity of their sound and performances on stage, the band was choosen within a 40 top proposals list to represent Italy at the Beijing Italian Expo in 1992.
Dorian Gray was actually the first European rock band to play in Chinese Republic.
On the way back from China, in September 1992, the band signed with Angelo Carrara (Battiato and Ligabue producer) to realize their first album "Shamano" (Target/WEA), whose first 3.000 copies printing went sold out.
The following two years saw Dorian Gray playing an almost uninterrupted tour and appearing on the main musical tv shows of the time (Rai Uno "Notte rock", "Roxy Bar"), as well as undergoing continuous changes in the line-up under the supervision of vocalist Davide Catinari, the last remaining member of the original line up.
The second work of Dorian Gray, "Matamoros" (Interbeat) sees the light in 1995: it's a sort of concept album about the sense of the limit, and it brings the band to conquer a place in the top 10 indie rock band in Italy chart, according to Rockerilla's Rockpoll. Despite its approximate mixing, the record gets positive reviews from the national press and it also gets some abroad promotion, with Dorian Gray being included in the cast of Freiburg's Europop Festival.
Among upcoming tours and tv apparitions ("Segnali di fumo" to top them all) 1997 arrives, bringing "Il veleno della mente" (Flying/LM), the third, extremely hard work of the band. Under the direction of producer Paul Chain, Dorian Gray achieves a rough and visionary album, which gets more enthusiastic rewies from the critic. 1998 brings more important live shows (Beach Bum Festival with Faith No More), but the stress and psychophysical attrition coming from neverending touring outline the band's splitting. Soon before the final act some tracks are recorded with the production of Paolo Favati (ex Pankow): they will appear on the semi-anthological "Tempi supplementari" album.
The last official act of the Old Testament of Dorian Gray is the conquest of the Lunezia Prize in 1999. Fernanda Pivano (Beat Generation leader translater in Italy) hands in the prize to Davide Catinari, who -- together with other winners Daniele Silvestri and Vasco Rossi -- turns to be acknowledged as one of the most interesting authors in the national landscape.

The new millenium brings at first the new single "Narcosuper" (Mescal/Sony), recorded by Davide Catinari in 2003 under the name DVega together with Giovanni Ferrario (ex Scisma) and Andrea Viti (ex Afterhours), then -- in 2005 -- the album "Tempi supplementari" (K-Factor/Audioglobe), a collection of unedited, remixed and video tracks which rekindles the attention and interest of public and critic on the Dorian Gray project.
Dorian Gray's New Testament era starts from here: the new album "Forse il sole ci odia" was released by the end of 2008, and immediately brought the band to the ancient splendour, with a national tour, a British one, a German one and the Career Award at M.E.I. - Indie Labels Meeting.

"Forse il sole ci odia" was out in a special cd-book edition, illustrated by Igort, international graphic novels guru. The band decided to mantain the same style for their latest album, "La pelle degli spiriti", out on March, 2011.
The cd-book contains 9 tracks and the illustrations by Manuele Fior, Angoulême Prize 2011 for the best graphic novel.
