'In the Hills of Manchuria" is a deeply melancholy Russian song about the 1904-5 Russo-Japanese war, revived by dissident artists in the later years of the communist era as an obscure, partially ironic commentary on Russian life but still carrying a potent charge of genuine patriotism, blended with a hefty quantity of characteristically Slavic pathos.
