DANA Put Some Words Together 1977 (FoD#24) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 07, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Noel Edmonds introduces DANA on Top of the Pops on 28 July 1977. She struggled to put some words together. "...it was pure agony ... my voice continually wandered off ... Tony Macaulay did wonders with my very flawed recording." Quotes taken from her second autobiography where she writes about Tony Macaulay inviting her to visit Los Angeles to record this song that he'd written for her. She was there for 3 weeks, staying at the 5-star Beverly Hills Hotel. The recording sessions took place in the legendary A&M Studios in Hollywood. Elvis Presley's lead guitarist play on the track. During her stay she met David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser, the stars of Starsky and Hutch, who took her to see a brand new band called Blondie.

The recording of the single came 5 months after her headline-making throat operation in September 1976, but the repaired vocal cord still became inflamed. She said it took 5 years to fully recover. So for this live TOTP performance DANA deserves a medal, as she only appears to be struggling with her hair.

The line-up for this TOTP edition consisted of:

Steve Gibbons Band -- Tulane (made #12)
Boney M -- Ma Baker (video) (made #2)
Showaddywaddy -- You Got What It Takes (made #2)
Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers -- Roadrunner (made #11)
Bob Marley & The Wailers -- Exodus (made #14)
DANA -- Put Some Words Together
Emerson, Lake & Palmer -- Fanfare For The Common Man (made #2)
Rita Coolidge -- We're All Alone (made #6)
Thin Lizzy -- Dancin' In The Moonlight (made #14)
Donna Summer -- I Feel Love (made #1)

They all made the Top 20 apart from the 25-year-old in the fabulous sky blue dress.
