Family Album - custom songs

I’ll write the song for your occasion.

"What struck me about Erik’s music was was how intensely prersonal it was. This simple melody and lyric was able to convey a story so rich in detail that you felt you actually knew the people he was singing about. Listening to Erik’s song about our son Bishop was like having someone read my thoughts and put them to music. Some stories need to be told before they are lost. Some emotions need to be expressed before they fade. Erik has the gift of helping people do just that."

- Michael Weidenbach, Father (Alabama)

Pages of Love (Our Family Tree): Jim asked me to write a song for his wife for Mother’s Day. I asked him for some information about his family and he sent me scrapbook pages that his wife made with his nine-year old daughter Victoria. The entries in the scrapbook were very touching about a Mother and her relationship to two daughters as they grow up. Her words were the inspiration for this song.

Bishop Got A Heart Like That: Michael found me on the Internet when he came across my song "Baseball In My Blood." He wrote me from Alabama and told me about his special son Bishop. What a story. This one wrote itself, and it’s all in the song: Bishop had a stroke when he was born and he was kept on life support for six weeks. He is now six years old and has overcome so much with heart, love and spirit. He now plays t-ball!

My Daddy Is My Spiderman: Eric says, "What can the song be about. all I can tell you is Ben is into Spiderman and he’s a know-it-all." Well, that was a start. And, after digging for more, there’s far more to the story. Eric is in the National Reserve. Ben has a little sister Samantha. And, when Daddy leaves on a short tour, the family has to adjust. There’s a song in that.

My Name Is Fred: I wrote a song called "Baseball In My Blood." Fred heard the song on the radio on the way to the opening little league game for his son Kyle and was compelled to contact me. We’ve become friends and when I learned about Fred’s story, I put it in a song.

Picnics In Heaven: Laura (songwriter) and I were talking about songs. She said she didn’t want to write another relationship breakup song, and I asked her what she wanted to write about. She mentioned her grandmother and memories of Summer trips from Texas to Colorado. The conversation continued and the song was written that afternoon.

Racecar Drivin’ Jackson: As a joke, Sherrie said I should write a song about her son and his racecar driving obsession. I wrote a verse and chorus and emailed an audio snippet her way. She couldn’t believe it could be a song. I told her she better give me more details to the story before I start making them up. She filled me in, and I wrote the song.

A Hundred Years: My friend Tom told me about his grandfather who was turning 100 years old. He was a remarkable man who walks over 60 miles a week. I did the math and he walked far enough to walk around the world in the past 10 years alone, from the age of 90 to 100 years old. A native of India, he was born in 1907. He lived through some substantial changes in his culture and rose above his situation by, as my friend says, "outwalking, outsmiling, outliving them."
