Before and after adding a ferrite toroid core to the coax from a random wire shortwave antenna - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 28, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
I put up a simple random wire antenna that goes into the basement, to be able to listen to the shortwave radio when down there working. It's fed via coax. I was getting horrible reception, with lots of noise.

I decided to try adding a choke. I got another piece of coax, and wrapped a many turns (about 23) as I could around a Fair-Rite 5943003801 type 43 ferrite toroid core. I put this in series with the incoming coax.

It made a huge improvement. This video shows the effect on a 49 meter band SWBC station. First, reception without the choke. Then some dead air while I disconnected the coax from the radio, added the choke, and connected it again. You can hear, and see, the improvement.

Looking for some shortwave/ham radio related apps? I have a few :) http://blackcatsystems.com/
