Here's my new budget line of 3 string guitars. When I run my "Make and Play" workshops, I always do a demonstration of how the guitar goes together, and so I'm left with lots of half-finished guitars and parts. I take the basic "stick in a box" and up-cycle it into a brand new instrument, with all the playablilty of my top of the range guitars, but at a fraction of the price. I laminate the through-neck for extra rigidity, add a hardwood fretboard, reshape the headstock, profile the neck and refinish the body. I then also either add inlaid fret makers or fret the neck with Van Gent fretwire, install a new bridge and pickup..and you have an original ChickenboneJohn guitar at a price to compete with the eBay "wallhanger" guitars.

Here are a few examples - a fretted guitar with passive piezo pickup, a fretted guitar with "lipstick" pickup and a fretless model with a "Strat" pickup. As for a softwood neck - it's the traditional way of making flamenco guitars and I've helped over 1000 people make their guitars in my workshops, all with this same basic construction, so it truly is tried and tested. The back lamination and hardwood fretboard make the neck fully stable and eminently playable.

Played here through my little Roland MicroCube amp, there's no effects to swamp or disguise the true sound of the guitar, other than a little overdrive on some of the playing examples.
