Chaconne in A Major - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 30, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
This French composition was originally composed for solo baroque lute, and it comes from a manuscript in Oxford, G 617, f. 136-139. It is labeled as a Sarabande, which is usually a dance in binary A-B format; however, this particular piece is structured with a theme followed by four variations, implying a form similar to that of a Chaconne. Hence, the selection was reassigned a title which reflects the actual nature of the piece. Because the piece was composed as a solo for one lute, a second accompanying part, or "counterpartie" was written for an additional lute by composer Tyler Kaiser, transforming the piece into a duet. The performance is by the duo of Edward Martin and Thomas Walker, on a matching pair of French style 11-course baroque lutes, modeled after the C-34 lute by Hans Frei, and were constructed by Daniel Larson. The strings are all gut from Gamut Music, and no metal wire or metallic salts were utilized, resulting in the stringing being pure gut throughout.
