Quadruple Chant in G, by Antrobus Taft Harris (1890-1916, a WW1 casualty) - St Mewan Church organ - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 13, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Quadruple Chant (Anglican chant, for a psalm or canticle) in G, by Antrobus Taft Harris (1890-1916; a Scottish casualty of the First World War), played by Peter Tylor on the 1909 Hele pipe organ at St Mewan Church near St Austell, Cornwall (NPOR D08358), 13/10/2015.
This chant was published on a separate sheet in Harris's memory by his father, with the legend "Composed (1909) by ANTROBUS TAFT HARRIS, MUS. BAC. (Edin.), 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Bedfordshire Regiment; killed in action in France, March 19th, 1916"; the sheet also states that "Copies may be had from Clement A. Harris, Crieff, Scotland. Copyright not claimed." (My copy turned up a few years ago amongst some very old choir music that was being disposed of by another Cornish church.) For more information about the composer, see: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic4388.html
Although written to be sung to prose verses of varying length, this chant could also be used as a hymn tune of 10.10.10.10. metre (as "Abide with me" or "O valiant hearts"), and I have here treated it as such - but without any particular words in mind.
Update: on Remembrance Sunday 2015, our choir here at St Mewan sang this piece - again, treating it as a hymn tune - to Fred Kaan's Remembrance hymn "God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind" (words at no. 698 in the recent Methodist book "Singing the Faith", and also online at http://www.stainer.co.uk/hymns/remember.html ).
