Carl Nielsen Symphony No 5 (excerpt first section) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 05, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Contemplate music minus recorded sound. ~ seemingly chaotic performances of Charles Ives Three Places in New England ~ dispersed meaninglessly into the ether.Such was irruptive volume of Ives lil ol noisemaker "Three Places" stylus kept jumping on my 1950s Mercury vinyl.but
150 years ago sounds dispersed never to be heard again. .
Imagine no Lady Gaga Lady marmalade ~. Forgive Christina Alguilera ~ . Imagine music with no recorded Billie "Lady" Day or Doris Day ~ Doris Kappelhoff Day please much achieved artiste whose contribution to music is impressively matched by cinema roles.. once touted for role Nellie Forbush in South Pacific. Good as Mitzi Gaynor was Doris as with Mary Martin woul;d have taken it to another level. . Ifcopod would chuck into Dublins Anna livia wodges of rock pop classical music big dealed by wordy purveyors. But let's scour detritus of metropolis' vanishing record emporia ~ Not like the old days. Dim lights soupy violin. Dolphin discs(Capel st) were still knocking around I bought 1957 Blues is Everybodys Business .. Manny Albam ~ who ? on u tube) a New York studio big band with string section on board ~ late Phil Woods handling alto solos. ~ great musician~~But Lady Marmalade better than~ " I feel for you"~ Chaka Khan ~Lady Marmalade favourite ~in Patti Labelle version ~

~~~~~~As i type late Prince composer of numerous classics including " I feel for you" Playing singing composing musical auteur a one man orchestra~ intercutting mashing up music in funky way ~ whilst sensible of jazzy antecedents Prescinding momentarily from recent avalanche of death losses nonetheless with late David Bowie ~ Prince most important artist succumbing in recent months/ years Prince v David Bowie interesting if not easy evaluation~ superficially both overlap but both essentially individual ~ sales probably favour Prince ( caught on the hop ~ they dont ) Artistically both long since peaked experiencing musical lacunae displaying heterogeneous influences serving hip constituencies not worlds apart. Prince a compendium has been celebrated so his fluid fluent guitar keyboard work compares favourably with rock guitarists ~ a musical polymath. Heterodoxy perhaps but where Michael Jackson was straighforward ~ driving off kilter rhythm spliced melody ~ Prince a symphony of musics moving parts checking out funky grinding interstices en route but gelling musically..
. Given 20th century shakeout most great composers with Igor Stravinsky in front have claimed their places. ~ among them Denmark's Carl Nielsen . His output not especially large including a fugally grounded late work Commotio an extended 25 minute piece for organ best version so far on U Tube ~ by Christian Wilson ~ compelling performance . I had an ancient version from the 1960s respectable for its vintage .If you have an inclination and stamina for mangled English hear the great Bulgarian bass Boris Christoff lisping outrageously through Nielsens opera Saul and David . Nielsens ranking in 20th century music has taken a mild battering slipping down the ratings a temporary hicccup but excluding Gustav Mahler Carl Nielsen rightly a proud son of Denmark is among four major 20th century symphonists. As I type listen to a snare drummer belting the percussion jazz style ~ great isn't it ~, Nielsen instructed in his Symphony no 5. American original Charles Ives would have been in accord liking to take music on the chin. Most performances of Nielsen Symphony 5 tippytoe around Nielsens drumming injunction . Another rant against classical music duffers Ifcopod ? This performance observes Nielsen instruction ~ namely ~ stopping the full might of the orchestra head on. If I had my druthers I'd line up ACDCs lil ol noisemaker Angus ~ drummer Ian Paice from House of Deep Purple ~ guitarist Ritchie Blackmore topped off by bank of Marshall speakers ~ all specially for the gig.
