Lux Vs. Motion Potion: Live @ Bonnaroo 2008 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 29, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
MOTION POTION & LUX VISUALS: For the past 6 years, Motion Potion has brought his eclectic brand of mashed up funk to the Bonnaroo Festival, performing with visual producer Alton "Lux" Parker. Parker, who holds down a regular gig with Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, BLUSIRKUT and the Crystal Bay Casino is among the most inventive live VJ's on earth.

MOTION POTION
Motion Potion (Robbie Kowal), called alternately the Dj for people who hate Djs (SFWeekly) and the "Swiss Army DJ", seems to have something for everyone. Funk impresario, mashup enthusiast, and live collaborator with such bands as Parliament-Funkadelic, the Mutaytor and Galactic. His career has been defined by an attempt to break down genre and scene barriers, playing every conceivable kind of music in the course of a night, a set, or a seven-minute mash-up. His own mix CD's range wider than most label's catalogs; live mixes that range from underground hip hop to electronic breaks to world fusion to rare southern rock.
The common denominator seems to be "the funk" whether it be funky urban electronic breaks, funky underground hip hop, funky nu-school rock and electroclash, or just plain sho'nuff motherfunkin' FUNK. This versatility has gotten him choice assignments such as the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Xingolati, Jamcruise, Mid-X, Wegofunk Paris, and Burning Man. Other pursuits include Sunset Promotions (producer of over 500 shows and 3 festivals including SF Funk Fest), the 6-year-old music newsletter "WhatDaFunk", "Scratch n Sniff" a duo project with SJ Littlewood, and "the Fringe" an artist collective aimed to push evolutionary music within the Burning Man community.

LUX VISUALS
Known as the defacto 'Live Funk VJ', Lux Visuals (a.k.a. Alton Parker) has had the honor of performing with live jazz/funk impresarios such as Karl Denson, Winton Marsalis, Skerik, Melvin Sparks, The Allman Brothers, BLUSIRKUT, and even DJ Sasha. Lux is often known to pick up his mixers and play them like live instruments, gaining the reputation as the best improv VJ on the scene. In 2003, Lux Visuals was invited to design and produce a reunion tour for 'THE DOORS' along with the Brotherhood of Light Show. LUX has performed hundreds of shows in every major city in the United States and extensively in europe.

The last few years have seen a huge surge of advancements in the ability to control, manipulate, and present visuals in a live setting that responds to the immediate environment. Similar to how a DJ mixes music from multiple sources into a live set, a 'VJ' (Visual or Video Jockey) mixes visual elements into a unique, one of a kind piece. Our vision is to see this art form and its ability to present a fluid narrative injected into the public dialogue.
