Polluted Ballerina - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 31, 2007
DESCRIPTION:
Video by Justin A. Langlois, featuring a new song by The London Apartments, explores the juxtaposition of polluted environmental reality and dystopian possibility with pure, fluid, naturalized movement. The investigation of the body in relation to a cleaner environment finds the ballerina cleaning the air through the contemporary act of collecting refuse in a black garbage bag. The movements are hypnotic, the music is melodramatic, collectively creating a sonic and visual contrast to the meta issue of irreparable environmental damage. The air quality under the Ambassador Bridge cannot be improved simply by collecting the particulate matter from the air and throwing it away, yet by displaying this impossible act through the dance and physical expression of a forgotten gymnastics floor routine, the environment seems somehow cleaner, somehow more acceptable. The body used as the natural tool it is for exploring environment, is documented in the unnatural process of poetically collecting pollution. The fluidity of the movements argue along with the dancing camera work and somewhat untraceable close-ups for a sustained glance at the environment in which this act exists and proposes a new, albeit impossible, solution for a clearly unresolved problem.
