Yo Zushi - "Something New" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 06, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
Taken from the zine/album "Smalltime", which I put out through Board of Fun in May 2013. Stream all the songs for free or buy the cassette and zine at: http://yozushi.bandcamp.com/album/smalltime

"Smalltime" is the first of three albums that I'll be releasing in some form or another this year. It was launched at the Clapton Zine and Print Fair at the Dentist on 4 and 5 May.

"Something New" was recorded by Ross Palmer at home and Dan Lea at Golden Hum. Dan did a bit of keyboard but Ross played all the rest; I did all the vocal parts and wrote the song. I'm going through a John Lennon/"Mind Games" period. I love John. That might come through a bit in this song.

The video was made over an evening by me and Zoƫ Taylor, using the video mode of an ancient digital camera and Magix. That's the laundrette we go to every weekend.

See boardoffun.wordpress.com or yozushi.net (which I'll update soon!) for more information.

Some old praise for earlier albums:

"His playfully eccentric lyrics about life's small moments, plucked acoustic guitar and rollicking rhythms suggest a less ramshackle Badly Drawn Boy or a better adjusted E from Eels... This could be the start of something major" -- ****, Q Magazine, "Q Recommends"

"Immediately likeable and with the unerring ability to bring a smile to the lips of any music fan... Perfectly constructed lyricism... With any luck, this is just a taster of what's to come" -- The Word Magazine

"Yo Zushi's folk songs have earned him plenty of high-profile fans around the world and this, his debut LP, looks certain to raise the bar even higher. A masterclass in storytelling" -- Dazed & Confused

"The spirit of Bob Dylan for the 21st century" -- Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 1

"A raw... intriguing talent" -- Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 2

"All the credentials to be the under-sung musical hero that we just don't get any more... Excellent" -- *****, Amelia's Magazine

"Lucid tales of alcohol-fuzzled intrigue and mishap... Melodies soaked in a warm melancholia" -- Metro

"Sweet melodies that entice you back... A taste of something different" -- Maverick

"Diversity and newness throughout... Haunting" -- Comes with a Smile

"Dreamy and beautiful... Versatile yet intense... Yo Zushi's campfire tales are at once wistful and uplifting, and this talented songwriter's fire looks set to continue burning" -- **** and a half, Subba Culture

"One of the most interesting albums of 2007... A world of acoustic music coffee bars, late night semi-drunken musings and the deeper darker edges of folk is explored and discovered" -- Americana UK
