Four Jazz-era Songs of Similar Structure | Performance, Analyses & Techniques - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 17, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
The four songs I demonstrate and dissect are Blue Moon, Five Foot Two, Anything Goes and At Last. Why? Because they follow the same chord progressions, to a point, and two of them include what I call 'floating 251s'.

A floating 251 is when the piece requires you to temporarily go out of key to a 'temporary root'. More often than not, this is to the 2nd, 3rd or 6th. As can be seen with these two songs, a minor 3rd and 5th can also be temporary 'ones' (roots) and are arrived at via the temporary root's own 251. (I must apologise here for, around the 20:00 mark, I got confused because I wanted to play the A, the second of G, which is correct, but I assumed it was the 6 that we were aiming for (the A), not the G (the fifth), so I named it wrong and got a bit confused; excuse me for that - I clarify it once I realise).

I also provide two LH ideas for accompaniment and two RH ideas for embellishment. Also note how easy it is to acquire jazz (and pop) repertoire by identifying patterns of 251s and 6251s.
