Evaluation, notes and excerpts of a detailed sound analysis , implemented in strings workshop in Bergkamen

(A cello built by luthier Semmlinger from Mittenwald/Bubenreuth in the year 1990 was examined)

Compared with other available tuning pegs, the Lauffer tuning peg excels in many aspects:

The Lauffer Peg Made of high- strength carbon material does not cause the wear and tear of the peg or the peg box. Compared with this, the conventional peg (e.g. made from wood) represents, concerning friction, by lubrication of the pegs with peg soap (curd soap) respectively Increasing the friction by applying chalk, for example, is always a compromise. In a conventional cello peg, after tuning the string, the peg has to be pressed into the peg box, which is not easy for beginners and students. Tuning with the Lauffer peg, on the other hand, is very easy.

The Lauffer Peg makes the fine tuners on the tailpiece superfluous.

The pegs known since quite a while as "patent pegs" already dispose of improved gliding properties, but don't allow for the relinquishment of fine tuners at the string holder. Beginners and Students can quickly learn to tune their instrument themselves.

The Lauffer Peg it makes a smooth and delicate sound possible. Similar pegs for violins that were tested did not work very smoothly.

With a Lauffer peg the string cannot get clamped between the rotatable and the fix part of the shaft, since the entire shaft spins in the peg hole.
This means the peg and string won't be damaged if the string gets stuck between the fixed and rotating part of the peg shaft

Advantages of Lauffer Pegs :

Absolutely smoothly and delicately tunes each string. The cellist does not have to bow down to the tailpiece to access the fine tuner.

The complete tuning-shaft rotates in the pegbox, and it cannot get between the turning and stationary shafts during pressure on the string.
The string is clenched between the rotating and stationary shafts.

The fine tuners on the tailpiece need not be installed, which provides the following advantages:

The sound analysis showed that the sound of the examined cello became more balanced and richer in overtones. The use of fine tuning pegs can lead to a significant reduction in the weight of the tailpiece. The existing ebony tailpiece weighs 180g with the fine tuners installed, and weighs around 75g after disassembly of the fine tuners. The effect of the additional measurement in the area of the bridge and tailpiece are seen with a mute or Wolf tone eliminator.

This enables the free oscillation of the strings between the bridge and tailpiece, and the exact adjustment of the distance between the bridge and strings over the tailpiece fret.
Expensive string instruments by famous luthiers, whether new or old, which were adjusted optimally, usually had only one fine tuner on the E String.

In a violin, the body does not get damaged by fine-tuners screwed down too low. However, their levers get slightly damaged while playing the violin. A damage that is otherwise found in many used violins.

No unpleasant overtones or disturbing oscillations from the mechanical parts of fine tuners, attached or integrated into the tailpiece (e.g. lever, bearing, mounting).

We offer the modification of string instruments with fine tuning pegs, wherein with the cello, due to the construction of the Lauffer fine tuning peg, the pegs can be adjusted to the instrument, too. Thus, the old pegs can be replaced without making any changes to the cello.

Testimonials from cello teachers in music schools:

"

The advantages that I see are:

Tuning simultaneously while bowing
The large reduction makes a very fine and uniform sound possible.
Der Steg wird geschont, weil der Großteil des Weges der Saite beim Stimmen über den Obersattel geht
No shrinkage of the pegs during dry seasons
The pegs need only be inserted and there is no need to glue them, as in the case of American pegs.
Easy Installation
The price is economical.

I cannot see any Disadvantages

The appearance is a matter of taste. As a technical-friend I find both functionality and appearance nicely worked out.

My wife teaches cello at the Music School Homburg and St. Wendel, I teach at the Music School (Musikschule St.) Ingbert.

The efforts on behalf of our students, as well as any simplification and improvements, are the primary goal of our work.
