Vinyl vs Spotify 320kbps feat. Toni Paananen. Frank Zappa : Peaches En Regalia (Hot Rats, 1969).

The sole purpose of this video is to get you to do the test using your home sound system to see if there is a difference.

Once again proper speakers or headphones are recommended over laptop or mobile phone speakers. Although, I wouldn’t assume a true audio geek to listen anything on mobile phone or laptop speakers.. :D

Yes, the YouTube mp3 audio is not the best way to do the demonstration, but it’s a way anyway and at the moment I cannot think of a better one to get the message thru. Unless you do the comparison yourself and leave a comment on how does it sound to you.

Mr Toni Paananen, an amazing drummer and my dear friend has been a vinyl listening dude most of his life and after we first did this test in spring 2016 we had no questions on why listening to vinyls has been his number one choice.

We use Dual CS 435 vinyl player connected to Yamaha RX-V2700 av receiver phono input and a laptop with Spotify app installed to Yamaha v-aux input. No processing was done to the audio files. Level matching wasn’t the easiest and the meter-only-watching-audio-geeks most likely cannot tolerate this test either as the meters say things are not correct. Measuring “energy” and “presence” of music with meters is like measuring the difference between having sex and making love using only a stopwatch..

Levels were matched by using both the RMS and ear. Yes, the mastering most likely is not the same and there are many variables that affect the sound. This mastering-theme will be covered on our future videos.

I personally think that when listening to balance, tone and pitch there is not that much of a difference, but when listening the “presence”, “energy” and “hollowness” there is a huge difference. If you cannot hear any difference on this video, try using a vinyl player and Spotify and not a YouTube video.

Leave a comment below on how does it sound to you. This is not a math test, but a description of art & how it makes you feel so there are no right or wrong answers; only audio geeking.
