As the decade changed from the 80s to the 90s, there were few battle DJs superior to Italian legend Francesco Zappala. He finished 2nd in the 1990 DMC World Final to David Fascher, and 2nd in the 1990 New Music Seminar Battle for World Supremacy to Steve Dee. Before those two narrow defeats, he finished runner-up to DJ Trix in the inaugural DMC European Championship in Mallorca.
