During an early audition with their vocalist back in early 2004, the collective energy of what would soon become YOUR HORRIBLE SMILE inspired a fresh burst of creativity and the song “Shot at the Title” was written within their first 3 hours together, largely on the basis of musical and lyrical improvisation. The song would later be recorded (twice), aired on college football games across the country, and featured as the lead track of the band’s eponymously-titled and self-produced debut release [the “Mona Lisa” EP]

Throughout the following year and a half the band embarked upon a rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, culminating in live TV and radio broadcasts, and a brief west coast tour early summer 2005. It was during this period that video director Ben Jacks would come to know and work with the band, initially producing the performance video “In My Head” and later the full-production short of “Shot at the Title”, both shot on location in scenic downtown Los Angeles.

As the band began tour preparations for a full US tour set for fall of 2005, fraught with personal frustrations Sky quit the group to pursue his punk-rock ambitions in the newly-formed BAXTER HOUSE, and drummer Kane McGee [PEDESTRIAN] was brought onboard to secure the tour slot. A management deal came about through the efforts of Steve K., who would go on to form 4Front Mgmt. During this transitional period, the band met producer Jason Wormer at an acoustic benefit show in Hollywood for the Mr. Holland’s Opus foundation. Plans were laid for what would become their second EP recording in the following months ahead.

YHS then set upon their full-scale US tour in a fondly-regarded but (tragically) mechanically unsound tour bus, traveling 3000+ miles over the course of just under a month. Upon returning home a good deal poorer but wiser, the band set about an intensive pre-production schedule at the home studio of Mr. Wormer. At the behest of personal commitments, veteran studio drummer Adam Marcello was brought in as a last-minute replacement for the upcoming recording.

Through the involvement of executive producer Jeff Greenberg, tracking and mixing was arranged at the prestigious and world-renown Village Studios in Santa Monica, CA. Under the guidance of Mr. Wormer and engineer Andy Brohard, the session was an all-around success. Upon completion of the recording, the band embarked upon a brief trip to Austin, TX to showcase at the annual SXSW music festival.

Upon their successful return from Austin, underlying building tensions and frustrations came to a front and the band was somewhat unexpectedly halted by the departure of their lead singer, who chose at that time to embark upon his career as a solo artist. Completion of the new record was put on hold, and YOUR HORRIBLE SMILE officially disbanded March 21st, 2006.

Late fall of 2006 saw the airing of “Shot at the Title” on ABC network TV as a backing soundtrack for a number of high-profile college football games, and in Feb 2007 the band finally packaged and released “The Village Sessions EP”, currently available online through CDBaby.com.
