1236 - The Battle of Saulė

The Battle of Saulė took its place on September 22, between the European Crusasders - the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and the pagan Samogitians. The Livonian Master, Volkwin was killed along with 48-60 knights of the order. This battle was the one of the first large-scale defeats which landed on the order in the Baltic lands. The Sword-Brothers, the very first Catholic military order (organisation) which was established in the Baltic lands, was greatly defeated and what was left was incorporated into the Teutonic Order in 1237. The battle inspired mass rebellions among the Curonians, Semigallians, and tribes previously conquered by the Sword-Brothers. An absolute sign for the Order to go home and never come back, but they did.
