Serial Killer Sound System !!
One of the best sessions i've ever heard.

From the blood and fire forum :

" Tubbys was known throughout the country for going out of his way to destroy every sound he played with. He used to specialise in "locking off" sounds, which meant literally stopping them playing by turning up his sound so loud that he'd drown them out, while they were playing. And he'd do it for as long as he wanted to, not just for one record. His DJ's specialised in cussing the other sound to the max too, and it was usually a sound war in the dance when Tubbys played out. Maybe he had to do this because at the time there were virtually no white people in dances and certainly no other white sound operators so he had to stand firm or he'd have been crushed. I should add that I've known tubbys for a long long time and he built my sound when I was playing out so I also have maximum respect for him. Anyone else who attended Tubbys dances back in the 80's or earlier will know the score."

" Yes Humble and I should add there was also a big rivalry between London and the midlands in the 70's and 80's when it came to sounds, especially Birmingham which had a massive scene and a lot of sounds then, so when a sound from London travelled to play there it took on another dimension cos they were defending London as well as their own reputation. I've got some classic sessions of tubbys playing up there, one I think was with Quantro from nottingham and at one stage Quantro's MC says Jah Tubbys I'm going to phone the sound system union tomorrow and make sure you never get to play in the midlands again. Then a next session with a sound from coventry which I think was called King Alpha (not the current day king alpha) and it ended up with a double lock off when all you could hear was both sounds turning up on each other and playing full volume, a pure noise and decibel war. It also has to be said that one of the main culprits for extreme cussing on tubbys sound was the man called Jasmine Joe, better known nowadays as Aba Shanti I. And I say that with no disrespect as Aba is a good bredren of mine, but that's the truth and that's what used to happen. I got off lightly the one time I played with tubbys cos I knew both him and Joe very well so they went easy on me but there was still a 40 minute lock off and It was the most difficult dance I ever played. They destroyed Manasseh in Leicester and when I say destroyed I mean destroyed, with the full cussing extravaganza from Joe, and as you correctly pointed out Humble, Tubbys had supplied all Manasseh's amps & cut all this plates too so it was a double pisstake.... Most of the new sounds playing out now wouldn't last 5 minutes in a dance with tubbys when he was in his prime. Respect to all and that was a little bit of sound history for you! "

" A lot of mon would never want to play tubbs during that era. I remember Dennis Rowe (Saxon Owner) saying he would never play tubbs cause a whitemon shouldnt be playing that type of dubs in a dance. To me that was a poor excuse. He was just fraid of getting mashup by Tubbs in my opinion."

"I 've been to one Quaker City Jah Tubs dance at Marcus Garvey Center in Nottingham. Quaker ran some serious bass line, and flung about 5 exclusive cuts of the J Clarke (Jah give us the power) dubs. Tubbs came in next and ran the sound effects for about minte and half straight, then dropped the Johnny clark special to the tune with Clarke saying how everymon calling for his give us the power tune, but only JAH Tubbs has the rights to it. The effing dance went woolie!!!! Tubs the proceeded to come in with just the bass line alone to that dubb. Mrs Tubby (Jean) had the blow horn peircing and the dance screaming. I dont think any sound can respond to a rivals dubb like how Jah tubbs can."
