Music Industry: “The Big Picture” Panel Series is presented by the Music Business Department at Los Angeles College of Music with the goal of developing a forum for discussion about all aspects of the music industry. The panel series provides an opportunity for anyone to participate in quality conversations that are educational both for the LACM community and for the music industry at large. Panels are hosted once every academic quarter at LACM and are open to the public free with RSVP.

“Gently Down the Stream…” discussed streaming, emerging revenue trends and the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. Moderated by Music Industry Consultant Geoff Mayfield.
As an analyst and journalist, Geoff Mayfield has tracked the music industry’s pulse for the entire course of his career.
From 1990-2008, Mayfield helped the music business embrace big data during his tenure managing Billboard’s charts department. From late 2008 through 2012, Mayfield was VP of business analysis and market research for Universal Music Group Distribution. Mayfield has been an independent consultant since 2013, compiling projects for Spotify, Yahoo, The Tone Knows, Accelerated Marketing and music app It’s Your Birthday. He is an advisor of Border City Media, which is rolling out a new comprehensive music data service called BuzzAngle Music.


Guest Panelists:

Vince Szydlowski is Senior Vice President of Label Sales for Capitol Music Group, where he implements and executes the company’s sales and retail marketing strategies while overseeing relationships with all key streaming and retail accounts. Prior to joining Capitol in 2014, he was Vice President of National Accounts for seven years at Universal Music Group Distribution, where he led the sales teams who serviced several key accounts, including Apple, Amazon, Google, YouTube, and Rhapsody. His earlier titles include Senior Director of National Sales, Catalog & Associated Labels at UMGD, and Senior Director of Product at Virgin Entertainment Group.

Mara Schwartz Kuge is President and Founder of Superior Music Publishing, a full service music publishing and synch consulting company. A joint venture with Modern Works Music Publishing, Superior provides international collection, administration, synch licensing, creative and other services with an emphasis on artist relations. Kuge has 13 years of experience in music publishing, including heading the Film and TV Music departments at Bug Music (now BMG) and 10th Street Entertainment. She has placed hundreds of songs in various media and has signed major artists to publishing deals including Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama), Scott Weiland, the National, Grizzly Bear, M. Ward and Mocean Worker.

Charles D’Atri is Partner and Co-Founder at Best Quality Management & Marketing.
Charlie’s company is partnered with DMI Music’s Kevin Gore in a management business focused on omni-channel maximization of music rights, including recordings, music publishing, name, likeness and life rights, as well as regular old career development.
Charlie spent 20 years at Walt Disney Company’s Disney Music Group, where he was marketing director, stewarding Queen and then-new acts like Fastball, Jesse McCartney and Grace Potter; several successful soundtracks, including “Mission: Impossible II” and multiple Muppets movies. Prior to Disney, Charlie was marketing director at Columbia.
