DESCRIPTION:
Profile of Du Zhiyang (杜志阳), a musical instrument builder from Quanzhou (泉州市), southern Fujian province, southeast China, in the Min Nan cultural area. The instruments Du builds are used primarily for nanguan (南管, also called nanyin, 南音), a traditional musical genre from the Min Nan (闽南) dialect region.

Among Du's innovations are dongxiao (洞箫, also called nanxiao, 南箫) that are longer and lower in pitch than standard ones; he achieves this by putting curves in the bamboo, similar to those of a saxophone.

Also featured in the video is footage of performances by an ensemble consisting of approximately 30 dongxiao of various sizes.
