The Tresor club is one of the longest running and most wellknown club projects for electronic music worldwide. It has become the concrete symbol of techno.
The club was started 1991 by Dimitri Hegemann and Achim Kohlberger as a follow-up to the obscure "Fishlabor/ UFO" - club (that had already pioneered the sounds of Industrial and Acid in Berlin at the time). It became an instant sucsess story, capturing the energy of a re-united city and picking up on the new musical input that had just started to become the biggest trend of the 1990s.
The vault was the remains of a bank building that was abandoned for several years and used as storage room. The founders immediately realized the energy within these massive steel-enforced concrete walls and the first "official" party was thrown march 1991. Huge sucsess despite next-to-no publicity furthermore led to the conversion of the existing indie-recordlabel structure, and in October 1991 Tresor Records was born. The early years of the club project were marked by a major renovation and cleanup effort to conform with the city's "venue/ discoteque" safety laws, so it was not unusual to see changes and construction work every other week.but the main basement chamber remained the center, like the core of a fusion bomb. Changing sound systems to match with the venue led to funny results in some cases: the BOSE tube bass speaker forced every glass in the bar down to the floor for a couple of weeks.
By 1995 a completly new generation of DJs and club visitors established, and the club had become a prominent spot on any alternative sightseeing tour. In the summer of 1996, Tresors Love Parade party forced a street closure of a nearby mainstreet in the city. Nobody could have predicted that the club was still to run another 9 years at the rapidly changing centre of Berlin. Open every wednesday, friday and saturday, Tresor delivered a good part of cultural heritage for the city of Berlin.
2005 the old venue had to close and parties continue to take place at exile locations until summer 2006. The new Tresor opened 2007 and celebrates 20 years history in march 2011
