This upload is of the complete performance. And it is white hot. Note that the Senta of Cheryl Studer is not your garden variety tempest-in-a-teacup. You were warned. With her large, powerful, luminous and distinctive instrument she delineates a character of sustained, live-coil ardor and intensity that often matches or surpasses the utterly tone-deaf (but sainted) Leonie Rysanek (and spares you the distasteful and disruptive Geschreis too). Terms used in some circles to describe this brand of impact are "demented" or "left blood on the floor". And here you have it, both. As for the other important principals, they are the stuff of dream casting. No one ever talks about the fine Dutchman of Alan Titus nor the equally fine Erik of Jorma Silvasti and one wonders why but comes up empty. No less important is the direction of Peter Schneider, a conductor in the great German tradition. No one talks about him either. And the exceptional Norbert Balatsch shaped the Bayreuth chorus to match the intensity of the principals which helped raise the already scorching-hot musical temperature to intolerable (for good) levels.
