Leo Fender's G&L Baritone guitar played by Tom McNalley - Video
PUBLISHED:  Dec 16, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
This is the last instrument that Leo Fender built at G&L before he passed away. It's an octave lower than a guitar, but has G&L S-500 pickups that give it a full (but undeniable guitar, as opposed to Bass VI) tone.

I was invited to come to Fullerton to the G&L headquarters to play this instrument and help figure out what it is, philosophically speaking. The folks at G&L are thinking about putting it in to production and no one is quite sure what Leo had in mind-- he didn't talk about it while he was designing it, but he did have a lot of special parts made for this one prototype (like a special bridge, special S-500 pickups and so forth).

The neck is essentially a guitar scale neck set to accommodate the bass strings (it's an octave lower, so technically not a baritone, but it feels like a baritone...), and it plays like butter. It is extremely resonant and the tone across the range is really full and beautiful. Tonally, you can easily move between a solid bass tone and low screaming guitar sounds-- putting this guitar down was not easy, so much music wanted to come out of it!

I'm playing it through a 4x Marshall.

Props to G&L for keeping the Leo legacy alive!
