Cul-de-Sac music/words by Tony Banks
Duke's Travels/Duke's End music by Tony Banks/Phil Collins/Mike Rutherford
From the All Music Guide:"Cul-de-sac" could have been to Genesis' 1980 LP Duke what "The Lady Lies" had been for And Then There Were Three or what "Me and Sarah Jane" would be for Abacab: the hidden progressive rock gem. The problem is, surrounded by two depressing ballads ("Alone Again" and "Please Don't Ask"), two album fillers, the song was simply too well-hidden. It features a handful of interesting themes, including an unsuspected introduction and a bombastic finale, all wrapped up by a catchy refrain written and sung in a way very similar in character to the particular style Canadian singer Gowan developed in the 1980s (indeed, "Cul-de-sac" sounds like a melody Gowan could have written). Nevertheless, the song was eclipsed by the constituents of the Duke suite which took all the available room in the live show, and, unperformed, it was quickly forgotten.
