before the blind confidence of youth is all gone

they’re all consumed with what to love,

I have a strange idea
in my happenstance mind
and if you don’t want to do it
I won’t waste your time
but maybe you could
learn to lay the machine down.
While you’re at it learn the names of the stars
and the trees and the rivers in between the bars-
then maybe you’ll make something
that lasts more than a season.
