Thomas Dolby Live - "Airhead" @ Largo 2012 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 04, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
This is one of a series of songs recorded live (and low-tech!) during Thomas Dolby's Spring 2012 Time Capsule Tour.

Comments from Thomas Dolby (vocals, keyboards):
Screw political correctness eh?

I like looping in this bassline. I tend to write a lot of my songs by using a repeating bassline and varying the chords over the top. This one manages to be both major and minor in different sections. In the second verse at 2'07 I'm triggering horn lines by Jazz Mafia. At 3'08 I play a solo with the Logic ES2 synth, and add in some vocal aside samples of my own (left over from the Sole Inhabitant Tour version of the song.) The rest of the time I'm playing a Logic Rhodes patch and a little organ duo thing on the top keyboard.

Comments from Kevin Armstrong (guitar):
say.... is that any way to address a lady?
This is what we in the trade call tha FONK... Staying on top of the tempo and in the pocket is the key. I feel the bass drum and snare and try to get behind it enough to be funky but still keep the forward momentum.
At the end another chance to let rip....

Comments from Mat Hector (drums):
Another great track to get on a groove too! In terms of the drum groove it's essentially a simple four/four groove, nothing hugely complicated, but getting the feel right and locking with the bass is vital. Thomas and I messed around with moving the drum feel, trying to get it to sit in front of the bass and the sequence to give the feeling of a driving groove rather than a behind the beat feel. I'm also singing quite a lot on this track, and mainly in my higher register. I'm not convinced about my American accent at 2:30!! There's also a nice little bass drum pattern that follows the keys and guitar riff at 3:24. One to concentrate on to get tight with all three of us playing the same rhythmical phrase!
