In 1984 Michael Kloss (git, vox), Bodo Prinz(bs), and Juergen Kuettner (dr) who played together in several bands before founded THEY FADE IN SILENCE. With Tobias Budnowski on keyboards joined a man who gave a distinctive colour to the sound of the band. Semiquaver hihat drums, straight like a sewing machine, chorussed guitars, a bass like borrowed from the british punk rock legends the Stranglers and soft Ultravoxish sounding keyboard pads, that's what emerged from the mixture. Combined with Michael Kloss' clear and punchy voice and ever adolescent lyrics, the perfect new wave incarnation.
Soon THEY FADE IN SILENCE got a reliable live reputation in and around Duesseldorf, the German Punk Rock capital of that time.
Despite the fact that record companies got interested in the act TFIS and their manager Robert Wolf decided to stay independent and founded their own record label: TEMPLE SUITE.
In Summer 86 the first Mini LP FROZEN DREAMS was recorded at SUITE-16, the legendary JOY DIVISION / NEW ORDER recording studio in Rochdale near Manchester. NEW ORDER bass player PETER HOOK was around during the sessions and from this acquaintance emerged the most exciting live experience for TFIS. In Dezember 87 TFIS supported NEW ORDER on their only live show in Germany on that tour at Duesseldorf Philipshalle.
Before this event TFIS recorded their first real longplayer: TRAVELLER WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN?, again at Suite-16. And before this, in early spring 87 the one and only TFIS single was released. CENTRE OF THE WORLD was an outtake of FROZEN DREAMS but funny enough the b-side, a queer early EBM-track called A CARRION, based on a poem by CHARLES BAUDELAIRE and recorded at the scenic Duesseldorf ATATAK Studio, became sort of a club hit in Italy.
In 1986 the heavily TUXEDOMOON influenced ominous Mr. ZIPPY joined TFIS on trumpet and guitar to bring in some arty attitude, in 1987 a new keyboarder - Olaf Wollschlaeger - extended the expression of the band.
And the band toured. Beside lots of gigs throughout Germany as well as in other European countries, e.g. the famous Paris GIBUS CLUB.
Nevertheless the big success failed to materialize. After some deals with major companies which did not turn out to anything good the final split of TFIS was in 1990.
Now it's 2010, 26 years since the first rehearsal sessions of TFIS. And now both LPs plus the single plus some previously unreleased material are finally available on a CD. The name of this remastered compilation: APOLOGIES. ARE HARD TO FIND. But what to apologise for at all? TFIS are back and not only in your favourite record store. With MICHAEL KLOSS(vox git), BODO PRINZ (bs), MR.ZIPPY (git, keys) and STEFAN ADLER (dr) we have more a resurrection rather than a revival of an authentic German new wave band of the eighties. It's all the same but different, come and see.
