The Christ Tree by The Trees Community (ALBUM REVIEW) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 11, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Released originally in 1975, this is the 2007 reissue released on Dark Holler / Hand Eye.

The Trees Community was some sort of Christian community of nomadic hippies that formed in the summer of 1970s. They lived in an abandoned loft for a while and then lived in a school bus. They practised meditation and yoga, and frowned upon Western style religions. They were together for 8 years and released some underground tapes of their music.

The music on The Christ Tree is very bible / gospel orientated psychedelic / folk music. From what I've read, these guys were only high on Jesus, not drugs (surprising!). Underneath all that religious mess is some actual, genuine psychedelic folk goodness.

The music is very intricate and a well woven menage of many disparate genres and cultures, ranging from Irish to Indian to Japanese to Tibetan. Harps, oboes, sitars, tablas, bells, flutes, guitars, all manner or percussion are used very effectively and skill. The music is very rich and textured. It has a very calming and transcendental quality.

The singing ranges from the somewhat more traditional folk singing to a more gospel choir style.Lots of exaltations and harmonies are used.

Christ Tree is definitely a well written and executed album. Very colourful and vibrant. It does get weighed down a lot from the religious over tones. But if your a true fan of psychedelic and folk music, this is definitely worth a listen.
