Paper boxes on the front porch
Of the house upon the hill
Tiny shadows come to fill them
Seeking shelter from the chill
Cotton lace upon the windows
Faded pictures on the walls
In the dimming light behind them
Silhouette of someone small

Sarah Grace has turned the lamp on
Pours herself a cup of tea
Settles in her favorite chair
A book of poems upon her knee.
Tennyson, this night's companion
Fills the room with light and sky
Stories spun with silken threads
Weave tapestries behind her eyes

Something falls out from the pages
Near the Lady of Shallott
Stops her dreaming, slows her breathing
Brings her home from Camelot
Yellowed parchment fine and fragile
Folded with the greatest care
Sarah Grace's fingers find it
On the floor beside the chair

Little eyes through windows watching
Golden lamplight in her hair
Carefully unfolds the paper
Then she reads the message there
On the bottom someone signed it
Love forever Alistair

I have watched and I have waited
Longed at last to see your face
I may never in this lifetime
Time I think has won the race
Somehow, someday I will find you
Maybe in some other place
Keep this letter to remind you
Wait for me, my Sarah Grace.

Then again she reads the promise
Pauses when she hears that part
Wonders how this letter found her
Bringing hope to hopeless heart
Just remember what I've told you
Wait for me, my Sarah Grace.
One day we will be together
Bound no more by time or place.

I have watched and I have waited
Longed at last to see your face
I may never in this lifetime
Time I think has won the race
Somehow, someday I will find you
Maybe in some other place
Keep this letter to remind you
Wait for me, my Sarah Grace.
