Mix two parts Dirty Rock with two parts Sleaze Punk and you get a four shot cocktail called THE MERCY KILLS.
This foursome met in St Kilda, Melbourne. They knew each other from the local music scene, having performed in bands such as Truckstop Diner Dolls, Ruby Doomsday, Porcelain, Beki & The Bullets Cinematica and Velvet Hammer.
Mark E, Jennifer, Nathalie and Josh Black fell in together over similar tastes in music and the desire to kick out a great live show. Since deciding on THE MERCY KILLS for a name (taken from a line in Rocky Horror) the foursome set a frantic pace of writing songs, playing shows and recording.
In early 2010 THE MERCY KILLS recorded the single Wasting/Save closely followed by their EP, New Rule. Cherry Rock was next, being invited to join a killer line up of great bands including Rose Tattoo at Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane, Melbourne.
2011 was a busy year for TMK with more recording, interstate shows, live to air performances on 3RRR, 3PBS and the cable TV show Rock'n'Roll DNA on FOXTEL.
In June THE MERCY KILLS were thrilled to be asked to play alongside YOU AM I and TUMBLEWEED for the 2011 Reclink Community Cup at Elsternwick Park. The day was a great success with thousands of people raising thousands of dollars for charity.
In December TMK launched two singles made up of some new material and a few tracks from their previous New Rule EP. The four songs I Wanna/New Rule and Can't Stop/Fall were released as a new offering in the lead up to the next EP. A video clip for 'I Wanna' has been shot by Melbourne rock photographer Carbie Warbie, due out in March 2012.
As 2011 drew to a close, the icing on this Rock'n'Roll cake of a year came in the form of an interview with the legendary NEW YORK DOLLS. Australian Musician Magazine invited TMK to interview the DOLLS for its December issue. THE MERCY KILLS hung out with the guys over two nights, saw them play two killer shows and got on famously.
Another unexpected highlight that came late in the year was joining a LE BUTCHERETTES show with Teri Gender Bender and OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ (At The Drive In/ Mars Volta) on stage at the Northcote Social Club. TMK were also invited to play at LE BUTCHERETTES after party at Cherry Bar following their sold out East Brunswick Club show.
THE MERCY KILLS are currently adding the final touches to their next EP and will be launching it in April 2012. Shows already booked for the new year include the St Kilda Festival, Palace Theatre's Rock'n'Rolla, Revolver, Espy, Day By The Green, Shedrock.
The bands says this is just a taste of what's to come as they gear up for a great year.
See you at the front!!!

The Mercy Kills - New Rule (2010 EP)
May 30, 2011 - 11:42pm — Kat Mahina

Melbourne four piece The Mercy Kills make all the gritty, dirty things in life seem gloriously attractive with their sleazy rock and roll. It's something that was made for brandishing devil's horns in the mosh pit. Their hard rock sound isn't reinventing the wheel, but they play with such a furious energy that it's impossible not to enjoy the massive riffs and spiralling rhythms that predominate on New Rule.
Opener "I Wanna" exudes sex, with the hypnotic bass line and pounding drums that reach a hedonistic climax with vocalist Mark Entwistle's husky cries. "New Rule" has all the feeling of a stadium rock anthem, with it's soaring riffs and sing-a-long chorus. "So Many Times" is an intense explosion of high energy guitar and features an exhilarating old-school style solo that will rock your socks off. "Fall" is one of the band's stronger tracks and sees them gnashing their teeth with Entwistle's venomous vocal delivery, exacerbated by the fierce rhythms and frenetic drumming. "Go" ends the record hard and fast with the brooding atmospherics culminating in a haze of distortion.
The Mercy Kills make music that is overflowing with attitude. New Rule showcases their tight musicianship and lust for harder-edged rock that is begging to be experienced loud and live. If you enjoy big rock stylings that are dripping in filth and depravity than check out The Mercy Kills. You won't be disappointed.
Review Score: 7/10
