Alfred Hitchcock - The Lady Vanishes (1938) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 19, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
Te Lady Vanishes is one of Hitchcock's best films, combining a great script, perfect pacing, wonderful performances and of course Hitch's knack for combining clever comedy with frightening suspense. However, what seperates The Lady Vanishes from the rest of Hitchcock's work is the amount of comedy woven into this thriller set in large on a train. The genius combination of suspense and laughter take this movie to a whole new level, and make it one of the most enjoyable watches you shall ever see.
Soon to be married righ girl Iris (Margeret Lockwood) is held by the avalanche that has delayed her train until morning, and so she books a room in the town hotel in which all of the train's prospective passengers are waiting as well. It is here that we meet Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty), a charming elderly woman who appears to be a governess but just might be something else. Also introduced is a folk dance enthusiast, Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), who clashes with Iris over the amount of noise he is making performing one of his dances right above her room.
The next morning, after hitting her head, Iris is looked after by Miss Froy as they are on the train. They take tea together, and when Iris goes back to her compartment to sleep she wakes up to Miss Froy having vanished! When all of the passengers and crew of the train deny ever seeing Miss Froy, Iris enlists the help of good-hearted Gilbert to uncover the dark secret that is lurking in the train.
