Mike d`Abo , ex Manfred Mann vocalist , released his album d`Abo in 1970 from which this song is taken . This was Mike`s first released performance of the song . He did not release it as a single.
He had written the song in 1967 and produced the original 1967 hit recording for Chris Farlowe. He also arranged the version by Rod Stewart which was recorded in 1969 and released on Rod`s debut album. .
Widely covered it has also been a hit for The Stereophonics and been used as the theme for The Office.
