RIOT GRRRL !
Christine Gun aka Christine Guin came about at the turn of the 90's during a concert by 7 Year Bitch, a cult group on the punk rock, riot grrrl scene, straight out of Seattle. It hits home hard! Her mind's made up, music would become her reason to live, and stage performance the place to express herself.
This musical adventure began in Montpellier in '93. Self-taught, she forms her first riot grrrl group: Moonstruck. Guitarist and singer with her scrawny, raucous voice, Gun writes and composes. The group is made up of 3 sexy, hysterical girls who pump out 'sixties style' music with nervy guitar riffs. Spotted quickly, Moonstruck is signed by the German female label «ThunderBaby Record » and in 1996 wins the 'Tremplin rock' in Montpellier. Moonstruck play one date after another and go on tour as success takes them across France and Europe. Gun gains top quality stage experience.
In 1998, she reforms with the Parisian, female punk metal combo X Syndicate, as guitarist. 2001 sees the release of the 2nd album « Up your kilt » (Wagram) a song from which is used for the original soundtrack of the French film Baise Moi, an impetuous, impervious road movie by Virginie Despentes. Tours and promotional work follow, adding to her stage experience.
The desire emerges to write and perform her own compositions and form a new group encompassing all her influences: rock, sixties, electro, punk, clubbing, power pop…
In 2003, she founds The Flaming Pussy and becomes its guitarist and lead singer with her girly, husky voice. Parallel to this, she launches the cult rock nights, « Dans mon Garage », at the Pulp club where she also doubles up as DJ. From 2004 to 2006, these club nights confirm themselves in the avant-garde world of Parisian rock clubbing. The Flaming Pussy becomes the resident group, with its wild stage energy and performers. On the turntables, Gun pumps out club-rock, revisits hits (J'aime regarder les filles by Coutin, The Stooges, The Cure…) and proves her talents in remix heaven and as an arranger of nervous rock (Take Off by Mlle Caro).
Nourished by her diverse experience, Christine Gun writes, composes, arranges and produces: « Jesus was a Girl », 1st opus of The Flaming Pussy, released in November 2008. The album highlights the artist's universe, going from complex, feverish sixties rock riffs to licked electro sounds. An electric, punchy album, whose texts affirm her commitments and values. The album release coincides with the avant-première at the Paris Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of a documentary about the group, "Les Filles de Paris", directed by Murielle Iris.
Over the past 15 years in the music business, Christine Gun has shared her experience and know-how with confirmed underground artists. She's worked with Tom de Pekin since 2004, graphic artist, trans/gay/lesbian activist, and director of Flaming Pussy video clips (amongst others), some of which have been projected at major International festivals.
In January 2009, together, they launch a Vjing music project: Flaming Pekin Project. The result of this is a mix of electro-rock music & explicit lyrics by Flaming Pussy along with the voluntarily provocative visual universe of Tom de Pekin.
Gun writes the hypnotic «Living in the town without a name » for the original soundtrack of "One Night Stand", a queer-porn film by Emilie Jouvet.
Madame H, for whom she'd previously written the Majorettes music, calls upon her talents once again for le Cabaret Bouffe de l'extraordinarissime Alberto Morillo presented in April 2009 at the 'Printemps de Bourges' festival. She writes several songs and arranges Deborah Degouts number.
Spring 2009 is a good one for Christine Gun. She can be found playing in a new off the wall trio « Alors heureuse ? » alongside Lynn Breedlove (Tribe8, prominent figure in the LGBT cause in the USA) and Deborah Degouts forming a top class punk-electro-rock show! The Riot grrrl spirit lives on!
2009 is the year of change for the group. The Flaming Pussy becomes Flaming Pussy Project, the perfect follow up for the more electronic feel of its music and 100% female line-up. Gun
Renowned for her work and multiple talents (musician, creator, arranger…), creating her own record label was the next natural step. Christine Gun (Label Manager & Artistic Director) launches Bonnie Records in June 2009.
Loyal to the artists she's worked with over the years and eager to encourage young groups who call on her talent, the label essentially gives pride of place to female, international, musically eclectic artists. Amongst them: Flaming Pussy Project, The Flaming Pussy, ArlonG, Nick Ash, Deborah Degouts… A label covering everything from punk-rock to folk and bringing into the limelight a variety of Riot Grrrl groups and singer-songwriters…
Christine Gun is currently working with ArlonG, a 100% Parisian female garage-combo, whose 1st album (planned for release in October) she's creating, arranging and co-producing. She's also responsible for producing Nick Ash's 1st single, Standing in a Corner.
Christine Gun continues to share the spotlight with different groups. Leader of the Flaming Pussy Project (electronic-rock), she still plays with X Syndicate (Metal) whose 3rd album and new tour are eagerly awaited, September time and Lotus Blossom (Garage).
