Masters Family This Old World is Rocking in Sin - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 08, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
When I wake up Sunday morning, coming down, and my head feels like a busted pumpkin and my mouth tastes like it was excavating a dirt road and my eyes look like they spent all Saturday night staring down diesel exhaust pipes, I stagger to the turntable and put on the Masters Family and think.... yup. This is apparently the first country gospel act to use more than just a piano or solo guitar for accompaniment. They rocked instead. Johnnie Purdom changed his name to Masters and began performing around Jacksonville FL in the early 1940s. Masters' wife Lucille joined him and the couple billed themselves as the Dixie Sweethearts. Son Johnnie Owen joined on guitar and they became The Masters Family. This 78 is from the 1950s, before Johnnie Owen suffered severe injuries in a car crash. Johnnie Sr. also wrote the gospel standard Gloryland March. (Source: Encyclopedia of American Gospel Music by W. K. McNeil)
