MICROKINGDOM: "Butterfly Bones" Live @ Hampden Fest, Baltimore, MD., 9/10/2011 - Video
PUBLISHED: Sep 11, 2011
DESCRIPTION: "I know there is some mystery/misunderstanding about our music. And we certainly have done our part to cultivate it, so I'm not going to say too much. But for those who are interested, read on:
"Microkingdom is NOT a free jazz band. Yes, there is jazz in our DNA, but also a lot of other stuff. Our recordings and live performances are on a Composition/Improvisation spectrum, often representing multiple points on that spectrum simultaneously. It is esoteric and adventurous music of course, but you know it's not much different to any other music - we organize pitches and rhythms into melodies, harmonies and beats that articulate musical forms. It's just that we have a rather rocky personal relationship with conventions of Pop songwriting, preferring approaches that tend to subvert prevailing ideas about composition and/or relish in the richness of ideas from the post-Classical musical periods. It is music that imagines the last 150 years or so of music as sort of a constellation of musical shards in suspended animation. When we play live we channel this stuff into each moment, snicking the shards together like pieces of a non-puzzle. Marc Miller came up with this description after our first show back in 2006: "Zone variance of extra-cognitive spiritual magnetism." Still makes sense." --Will Redman of Microkingdom
