The Bicycles: Oh No, It's Love-Directed by Joel MacLeod - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 25, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
The video for Oh No It's Love, was written and Directed and Shot by fourth year NSCAD Film Major, Joel MacLeod. The video was shot as a grade school play that chronicles the tale of a not so heroic knight (Matt Beckett) who attempts to rescue a distressed drum-playing princess,(Dana Snell) held captive in a tower. He quickly discovers that the tower is guarded by an angry fire breathing Dragon (Drew Smith), and must rely on his trusty Unicorn (Todd Chapman) stead to harness the power of love to save the day.
The video was shot in between 11:30am and 4pm during a sunny October day. It was shot in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in NSCAD University's board room. The costumes and props were made by Ben Stephenson, Matt Stackhouse, Tiffany Westwood, and myself. The unicorn mask made by the me too and looks more like an under evolved Chinese Dragon then it does a unicorn, but I insisted it the horn would give it away. The Dragon looks a lot more like a dragon, probably because it was made by felt enthusiast, Ben Stephenson. The knight's wooden tinfoil helmet, cardboard sword and gloves, were made by Matt Stackhouse, who based them on a sword and gloves he made for a Power Ranger Halloween costume when he was young. The beautiful paper-bag princess dress was created by seamstress extraordinaire, Tiffany Westwood and adds a much needed feminine touch to the wardrobe. She also was the assistant camera operator. The spot style lighting was set-up and coordinated by Adam Rafuse. And the set was built and designed by me and Ben Stephenson, who together are a craft making force not to be reckoned with. Todd Chapman, is the magnificent young thespian who stood as the unicorn for Andrew Scott who couldn't make the shoot. Dayle Hendrix kept us at a good working pace, and managed to whip up a shooting schedule based on the storyboards, in 5 secs flat. Lindsay Macpherson, Ryan Ritchie, Todd Chapman, and Tiffany Westwood (who saved us with her knowledge of fabric drapery),also helped set-up the set, and did some amazing cloud jiggling work.
Ryan Ritchie was also the on-set photographer. You can find the shoot photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryantro/sets/72157609211357789/ Jenna Murphy and Lindsay Macpherson used their brute force to stabilize the tower while Matt scaled it. Jesse Cappe's wizardly like fingers put this bad boy together in the editing room.

Matt Beckett did a lovely lip sinking performance for the video, while Dana put so much enthusiasm into her drumming she broke the cardboard sticks. Drew sat quietly by until it was his time to be filmed, when he then laid down some slick dance moves that would make the king of pop himself spew in awe. Todd showed of some real bass playing chops with his infamous side sway wiggle. The unicorn and dragon masks fell off almost every take but Todd and Drew handled this set-back like pros. Peanut butter and Jam sandwiches were made for lunch in the spirit of the video, but remained virtually untouched by all. It must be a kid only thing. Ben however, had his first ever PB and J sandwich that day to which made up for the lack of consumption by the rest of the cast and crew. The band was amazing to work with and a good time was had by all. The crew later all went to the Bicycles show at the Coconut Grove that evening for the Fuzzy Logic Showcase where Dana and Andrew played their first song sporting the Dragon and Unicorn mask which fell off quickly during the first verse. Bummer... Maria, the bands manager, was super friendly and hospitable providing me with a shiny new custom "B" T-shirt at the show. This was truly a great and memorable day.... Here is the video that will always remind me of it. Thanks Bicycles, Fuzzy Logic Recordings, and Crew! Hope you enjoy the video!
