Ethan Leinwand - Deep Morgan Mercy Blues (Henry Brown and 'Cripple Clarence Lofton) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 27, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
This tune is a mash-up of Henry Brown's "Deep Morgan Blues" and Cripple Clarence Lofton's "Mercy Blues".
I love Henry Brown. And i wish more people did too. Highly active in the 20s and 30s St. Louis blues scene, the bulk of his work is that of accompanist - with singers like Alice Moore and Mary Johnson, and often joined by Ike Rodgers (the most low-down trombonist you'll ever hear).
Though Roosevelt Sykes is probably the most famous St. Louis blues pianist, Henry Brown's style is considered the best representation of the St. Louis blues sound of the 30s. Characterized by a sparse but steady left hand "stomp" and frequent trips to the V chord for its signature color, Henry Brown and his fellow St. Louis pianists were the ultimate in Low-Down, Pre-War, Piano Blues.
Stay tuned for more examples of the St. Louis sound as well as more information about Cripple Clarence Lofton and his raucous Chicago style.
