Welcome back to YOU Can Beatbox where today we're going to be learning the backspin roll. This is a sound that I learned from beatboxer Garrett Wells so here's a link to his channel and a huge thanks to him for teaching me this sound at the American Beatbox Championship.
To do this sound, you should be able to do the inward K snare, so here's the original tutorial for that. Beyond that, this sound is a bit tricky.
Here's the basic premise. The backspin roll is an inward sound that takes in a lot of air and the specific sound is made by your cheeks flopping around as you breath in air. The basic setup of your mouth is as follows:
Place your tongue as if you are going to do an inward K snare, with the tip of your tongue touching the roof of your mouth. Once your tongue is in position, make an O shape with your mouth, as if youre going to make an O, hence the term O shape...Make sure that your tongue is still touching the roof of your mouth and then breath in air in a steady inhale. When you do this and have the right mouth position, your cheeks should be loose enough that you get this backspin roll noise. And if you dont get it the first time, try again. And if that doesn't work, try again. And if that doesn't work, give up. NO no NO try again! I kid you not...when Garrett Wells first taught me this sound I couldn't make it at all. In fact, he taught me in August but I couldn't actually make the sound until TWO months later! So keep at it and you'll get this sound.
And here is one practice beat once you get the sound:
1) B t K t B t Q x2
Like I said, have patience with learning this sound because even after I had been beatboxing for more than 4 years it still took me 2 months to learn this sound. But I have faith, young padowan.
It looks like that's all for backspin rolls. Like this video and clickity clack on that subscribe button to keep getting this tutorials. Thanks for watching YOU Can beatbox and next time we'll be learning how to perform.
