‘I ran into Don Carlton again and with Manning and his ever present camera we headed one final time into those far-flung fields where The Amigos were playing in the early hours. It was their fifth gig of the weekend, and so tight, so euphorically funky, the tent became a sweat-pit, jammed to the gills and I danced beyond the burn, a peak moment.’ Caspar Gomez, Beatmag - Glastonbury diary.
Defying conventional comparisons, The Amigos have created a unique space for their music which bypasses genres or scenes. As comfortable on large festival stages as they are in late night London hang outs, the mix of catchy tunes, irresistible rhythms and exciting one off live performances, have taken The Amigos out from the underground with little fanfare, just doing what they do.
' The Amigos major in gritty funk grooves, interspersed with ska and hedonic attitude. Imagine a frenetic gumbo of The Clash, Alabama 3 and the Blockheads and you’re a fifth of the way there. ' Thomas H Green, The Telegraph
The Amigos form in 2007 and quickly gather momentum on the strength of live appearances throughout the UK, the resulting mayhem gets nicknamed ‘the dirty love circus’!. Towards the end of the year the band are asked to support outlaw favourites the Alabama 3 at some choice shows and a meeting with drum and bass producer Wickaman (Ministry of sound/Infrared/Blackwidow) prompts The Amigos to embark on their first serious recorded collaboration.
2008 begins unexpectedly, with the band being asked to support 90’s legend Neneh Cherry at her first UK show for some years. A succession of festival bookings takes the Amigos to a wider audience with notable appearances at Beachbreak Live, Glastonbury, Beautiful days, Scotland’s Wizard festival and Irelands’ Electric picnic (plus a host of other smaller festivals). The bands reputation as a refreshing and exciting live act grows. Headline spots at many well known London venues see the year rounded off by being named BBC introducing band of the year by 3 counties radio, with a special feature on Tom Robinson’s first 6music show of 2009.
The rest of the year is filled with more performances for the BBC, national shows and the summer festival circuit becoming busier than ever before, culminating with a main stage appearance at Shambala to finish the summer rampage. Recordings with Wickaman featuring Jah Nation hit the radio 1 playlist and gain international recognition.
Into 2010 and the Amigos start the year supporting the Fun lovin’ Criminals and ex-clash guitarist Mick Jones’ Rotten Hill Gang leading in to the fullest summer festival season yet. The band will be returning to Glastonbury, Beautiful Days, Sunrise Celebration and many other favourites adding Standon Calling, Rhythms of the world and Bestival to an already extensive list.and the year isn’t even over yet!.
There is no knowing where it will stop, or why it began.it just is. People come together and get down. The Amigos frontline gets bigger as people realise that this is just good music, delivered with conviction and a glint in the eye. Rockers, Ravers and misbehaviours all understand.it’s a dirty love thing.
