ANGELIC UPSTARTS live solidarity
02 teenage warning

Formed in South Shields, in the North East of England during 1977, the Angelic Upstarts were, along with Sham 69, amongst the first to represent an overtly political side to the punk rock phenomenon. Their working class background and hatred of racism and bigotry became the platform for their music, which was unsurprisingly extremely hard-edged and uncompromising. Front-man Mensi was a legend in the making. In 1978 they recorded and released their first single 'Murder of Liddle Towers' independently only to have it picked up by Small Wonder who released it nationally to commercial and critical acclaim. It wasn't long before Sham's lead singer Jimmy Pursey had them in the studio producing their debut album 'Teenage Warning' which spawned the iconic single 'I'm an Upstart'. The rest, as they say, is history.

Initially the Upstarts split in 1983 but reformed several times and this film captures them in 1997 at the Holidays in the Sun festival at Morecambe Dome. It's to their credit that in spite of being one of the most ideologically misunderstood bands to hail from the UK they have remained faithful to their ideals and thus have created and retained a huge and devoted following. They have also never lost any of their edge when performing live. Politics aside they are amongst the most exciting bands ever to grace the stages of the international punk rock circuit. Watch and learn.
