Daphne & The Tenderspots- Disco Hell , I'm a Natural 1979 - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 09, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
1-DISCO HELL (Packham /G. Smith / D. Nancholas /
S. Hughes / N. Monnas / A. Wilder)
2- I'M A NATURAL (G. Smith / D. Nancholas / A. Wilder)

A technically proficient six-piece combo featuring
actress Dafne Nancholas (v), Alan
Normal (aka Alan Wilder, k, ex-Dragons, see
listing), Graham Smith (gtr/v), Nick Monnas
(d) and Jo Burt (b, ex-Dragons), replaced by
Steve Hughes, formerly of Burlesque, after a
few weeks). Active from February 1979,
Dafne and The Tenderspots released their
lone 7" on June 1, before calling it a day
within the year. The anti-Disco A-side is not
representative of their live set (which had
echoes of Roxy Music and XTC), as it is just
a Disco-ish song of little substance; however,
the Glam/Powerpop cut on the flip is a much
better offering. The single was jointly produced
by Tab Martin and Dominic De Sousa:
greeted by negative reviews, it sold poorly
but was nevertheless licensed for release in
Germany and Holland, where it appeared in
picture covers unlike the UK pressing which
was housed in a company sleeve. Dafne and
The Tenderspots' 7" is now sought-after
among collectors as it marked an early vinyl
appearance by Alan Wilder, who would later
find fame and fortune with Depeche Mode.
After releasing a single with Dragons (see
listing) he had worked as a session player
most notably for DJM and Rialto Records
(he also played 'uncredited' on The
Korgis' international hit IF I HAD YOU, see
listing). Following Dafne and The Tenderspots'
break-up, Wilder formed Real To Real
(1980) and collaborated with The Hitmen
(1981), finally joining Depeche Mode in
1982.
