Moussorgsky "Pictures at an Exhibition" Viewer Q&A "The Gnome" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 09, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
This is a viewer's request tutorial from Cauê Muratt in São Paulo, Brazil for tips on practicing/playing the difficult last 5 bars of "The Gnome" from Moussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".

Spoken dialogue as text:

The practice approach I'll demonstrate for you is based on what I call "keynotes" practice.

When you keynote practice, prolong and accent these suggested keynotes highlighted. Play these keynotes consciously with focused attention and the all in-between notes intuitively.

It's worth listening to an orchestral performance of the same bars as you may wish to capture a little of that sound texture in your performance and in these examples I'm using the resonance position of the harmonic pedal, so there's no sustain, just the echo of sympathetic resonance from the unplayed strings.

If truth be told, pianists have a tendency to play these bars a little quicker than an orchestra, but don't feel you have to, as with a clear and even execution in staccato these bars can sound just as effective as music at a moderate tempo. After all, Moussorgsky was describing in music "A sketch depicting a little gnome, clumsily running with crooked legs." So, maybe he wouldn't really run as fast as all that.

I'll demonstrate what I mean by keynote practice taking these bars from a slow to performance tempo.
