Philippines-U.S.A. | Electric Kulintang | Susie Ibarra and Roberto J. Rodriguez - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 15, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Concert of the duo Susie Ibarra (percussions, kulintang, electronics) and Roberto J. Rodriguez (percussions, electronics) for the project ‘Electric kulintang’. This project was created in 2005 when the New York based Filipino-American composer and percussionist Susie Ibarra began to use this traditional Filipino instrument in her performances. Under the encouragement of Roberto Rodriguez she turned kulintang electric and started performing this instrument in duo, together with electronics. Kulintang is a Filipino musical instrument of the gong-chime type, made of eight tuned gongs placed horizontally on a rack. As in their first work, Dialects, the music of this video is made of an elaborated rhythmic tapestry by Rodriguez and music composition by Ibarra. In the video excerpts Ibarra starts performing on the drum set, and then moves on to play the kulintang.
Concert held within the project ‘Music from southeast Asia’ organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies in cooperation with Conservatorio ‘Benedetto Marcello’, Venice, and Teatro Fondamenta Nuove.

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, 10 May 2011, Teatro Fondamenta Nuove, Venice.
