No Jericho by Susan McKeown

And so I drifted far, far out to sea
I carried that anchor with me
Close to my chest
That's what I always did best
And I never learned a thing
Why the truth holds such power
Why I couldn't make it sing.

I was still carrying the flotsam of our love
For scavengers to make sweet pickings of
Or for myself
So I could drink the dregs of
This cup at my lips
I'll bid farewell to the dark
With one last cold kiss

This is no Jericho that we have won
No victory song to be sung
No never no more
Cause I've been over that sea before
And I know it too well
There'll be no looking back for me now
That I've broken the spell.
