Susan Marshall created two music videos this spring as counterpoints to her new evening-length dance work, Play/Pause, which premieres in September. Stop, featuring the music of David Lang, was released online in August, and Revel, to the song Revel in Contempt by Brooklyn indie band Buke & Gase, was released online today. In these music videos, Marshall references the dance moves and sleek production values of popular music videos. She introduces abstraction by adding choreographic complexity, and stripping away context to make movement the primary element.

Marshall is intrigued by the way we meet many of the popular musical artists we love first through some mediated version of their work. Only later do we encounter the artists live and then we are looking for them to fulfill or surprise our expectations. It is in this spirit that Revel, the video, was created: as both a bridge between contemporary dance and popular culture, and as a way of setting up and challenging our expectations of these genres.

About Play/Pause:
In an electric guitar-fueled evening of postmodern dance-theater, Susan Marshall couples her intimate, structured choreography with the seductiveness of pop culture to explore our complex relationship to the media we consume. This evening-length piece for six dancers features a commissioned score by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, performed live by members of electric guitar quartet Dither and Mantra Percussion. Play/Pause premieres in Chicago in September and the subsequent tour dates are listed below.
